Bolivia – A powerful new documentary produced by Exomad Green and Carbonfuture, in collaboration with Tree Media, offers a rare, transparent look at the carbon removal process — from forest floor to verified carbon credit. Shot deep in the Bolivian Amazon, the film brings to life the journey of biochar-based carbon removal, its measurable climate impact, and its deep-rooted ties to land restoration and community empowerment.
The short film follows the full lifecycle of a biochar carbon credit, capturing the transformation of sustainable forestry residues into biochar, the rigorous verification process behind carbon credits, and their final integration into the global voluntary carbon market. It highlights Exomad Green’s innovative use of pyrolysis to convert residual biomass into a stable, carbon-rich material that locks away CO₂ for centuries.
“This is more than a story about carbon,” said Diego Justiniano, CEO of Exomad Green. “It’s about regenerating soil, preserving forest ecosystems, and investing in communities. Carbon removal is just the beginning.”
The film also documents Exomad Green’s growing infrastructure, including two operational facilities sequestering over 120,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with a third and largest site under construction. The goal is to remove one megaton of CO₂ per year. The expansion is backed by a landmark 10-year agreement with Microsoft for the removal of 1.26 million tonnes of CO₂, a deal that represents one of the largest durable carbon removal agreements to date.
Beyond technology, the documentary focuses on impact. Biochar produced by Exomad Green is donated to Indigenous communities and smallholder farmers to help restore overused soils, improve productivity, and reduce the pressure to expand into vulnerable forest lands. Viewers are given an unfiltered look at how carbon removal can catalyze climate resilience, health improvements, and economic opportunity at the local level.
The project efforts were led by Sebastian Manhart, along with Mathew Schmid and Leila Conners of Tree Media. With intimate footage from sawmills, pyrolysis sites, and Indigenous lands, the film underscores the urgency — and hope — of real-world climate action.
